I was directly involved in the production coverage of the 24th annual Skimboard World Championships, which aired on Bluetorch TV on Fox Sports West in the early 2000s. I worked on-site as a cameraman, responsible for capturing B-roll footage throughout the event and interviewing the athletes competing in the championship. That meant documenting everything beyond the heats themselves—the crowd energy, pre-run moments, post-run reactions, and the personalities that gave the sport its character.
Bluetorch TV focused on alternative and action sports like skateboarding, surfing, and skimboarding, and this coverage played a real role in giving the Skimboard World Championships broader visibility at a time when the sport was still carving out mainstream recognition.
One of the most prestigious events in skimboarding, The Vic, takes place annually at Aliso Beach Park in Laguna Beach, California. Dating back to the 1970s, the competition is known for its demanding shore break and for attracting top professional and amateur skimboarders from around the world. Being on the beach with a camera—shooting B-roll and conducting athlete interviews—put me right in the middle of that history as it was actively unfolding.
